NINJAGO Movie character posters encourage you to 'be ninja'

Posted by ,

Be masterful, victorious, kind, green, fire, water, lightning, ice and earth. Wu, Garmadon, Misako and the six ninja, respectively, tell you this in these new The LEGO NINJAGO Movie character posters from USA Today.

A second trailer soon seems inevitable now - what, with this and the video game announcement.

Catch all nine after the break, including character descriptions, then let us know what you think in the comments below!

Master Wu: This wise, all-knowing mentor promises to teach his students to become ninja masters but first they must find their inner peace… or is that piece? He wants them to rely less on their mechs and more on themselves and each other. Wu is Lord Garmadon’s brother, and uncle to Lloyd. He carries a staff he can play like a flute, and a hat that doubles as a flotation device. Years of meditation have not softened this warrior’s edges—or his tongue—and though his students might think he’s “way old,” Wu is still full of surprises.

Lord Garmadon, the Worst Guy: The baddest warlord of all time, Lord Garmadon has glowing red eyes, sharp teeth, horns, and four arms. Has an affinity for sharks. Lord Garmadon can smell fear, but everyone around him can see it because wherever he goes people flee in panic. Impatient, impulsive and completely self-absorbed, he likes to make a point by firing his generals….from a volcano. Though he hasn’t been successful yet, Lord Garmadon never stops trying to take over NINJAGO City. But why? Could it be he needs to reconnect with the son he hardly knows?

Koko, Mom, the former Mrs. Garmadon: Lloyd’s devoted mom Koko is smart, strong and independent. As Lord Garmadon’s ex-wife, she is not afraid to stand up to him – even though he’s twice her size and has twice as many arms. Koko knew “Garm” when he was a young warlord eager to conquer the world. Back then, she thought that was just a figure of speech. Turns out, he meant it. So she took young Lloyd away in the hope of giving him a normal life. But that didn’t work out quite the way she planned.

Lloyd, the Green Ninja: As the legendary Green Ninja, Lloyd is a Master Builder and the leader of a secret ninja force protecting Ninjago City from the most notorious villain of all time: Lord Garmadon. Crowds cheer the Green Ninja as a hero, but when he takes off his mask they only see him as Lloyd, the boy unfortunate enough to be Garmadon’s son. It’s hard for him to make friends or get through a day at school because Garmadon ruins everything. Still, Lloyd yearns to have a real relationship with his dad.

Kai, the Fire Ninja: This ninja is fiercely loyal and protective when it comes to his friends, like Lloyd, and his sister, Nya. Outgoing and enthusiastic, he is often ready with a hug. He might lack patience with some of Master Wu’s instructions, like trying to produce a flame by rubbing two sticks together, but Kai really gets fired up when there are bad guys to fight.

Nya, the Water Ninja: Kai’s sister Nya is focused and confident, competitive and highly motivated. She doesn’t just climb in and out of her mech, she gives each move an aerobatic flair, and when she rides her motorcycle through the halls of NINJAGO High school everybody had better get out of her way. Nya’s role model and she-ro is the famous ninja Lady Iron Dragon.

Jay, the Lightning Ninja: This ninja is a real live wire who zaps his opponents with lightning bolts. Jay comes from a close family so he understands how hard it is for Lloyd to be at odds with his dad. He can be nervous and a little overly cautious, but Jay always comes through on the battlefield. If only things were as easy with his big crush, Nya. Every time he works up the nerve to tell her how he feels, he gets interrupted.

Zane, the Ice Ninja: Part boy, part Nindroid, this ninja is super cool. Freon literally cools his fuel cells and he shoots down his opponents with an icy blast. Logical and methodical, Zane is guided by his programming and sensors – but don’t call him a robot! Zane is quick to remind everyone that he’s just a normal teenager, even if he doesn’t fully grasp sarcasm and some of his pop culture references are frozen in time..

Cole, the Earth Ninja: A ninja who loves to move and groove, Cole is never without his music. He even likes to hear Master Wu play the flute. Cole’s mech has built-in turntables and a powerful sub-woofer, creating waves of intense sound to seriously rock his opponents and blast their mechs into pieces, not to mention shatter the windows of nearby cars and buildings.

The film hits theaters on September 22nd.

The battle for NINJAGO City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, also secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat the evil warlord Garmadon, who also happens to be Lloyd's dad. Pitting father against son, the epic showdown tests these fierce but undisciplined modern-day ninjas as they learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash the inner power of Spinjitzu.

Bionicle something?

By in Ireland,

I don't really like the way the minifigs are in real environments here. I think much of the style and appeal of the LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman was the fact that you could look around the screen and everything would be made of parts, just like a stop motion film you could make at home. I hope this film doesn't take away too much from that homemade brickfilm style by including too many "realistic" effects - for example, I'd much rather there be actual lightning bolt pieces in the movie than this realistic CG lightning.

I don't know much about Ninjago's story but this does remind me a lot of Bionicle's tradition of each character having a specific power based on elements. It puts a little bit of a downer on my hopes of there ever being a cinematic Bionicle film, but oh well!

I really hope this film turns out well!

Chrismajor2124 to be answered in season 8... So Wu and Garmadon aren't brothers any more, and Misako is YOUNG! But yeah, very different, this will take some getting used too. But I think I'll still enjoy it.

BrickHeed 02 yes it will. But at least the minifigure for Kai will actually have a ACCURATE head this time.

BrickHelix true...

^Wu and Garmadon are brothers - it states that much in Wu's bio.

Anyone know when the new ninjago movie sets will be released?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Hmmm... is Brickset, being a British site, allowed to promote ninjas?

(remember how TMNT were rebranded TMHT in the UK)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@chrismajor2124 I didn't think Lloyd had a element!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really excited for the movie. While it took some getting used to at first, I love the new takes on these characters.

By in Canada,

@Sammael - Wait, what? What does the 'H' stand for?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Judging from the posters and the tag lines, I'd guess that Lloyd's elemental power is environmental friendliness.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@CarolinaOnMyMind they became "hero" turtles.

I'm just waiting for Nya's poster to be banned for causing drowning.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

"Hero!" Of course. I couldn't think of anything that would fit there.

Also, Cole's poster might be banned for causing smugness.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

And is anybody else amused at just how dislocated Sensei Wu's legs would have to be to achieve the pose depicted in his poster?

By in Puerto Rico,

Half of these quotes don't even make any sense. How do I be Water, Ice, Earth or Green?

Also, I can't speak for everyone, but to me, it comes off as a bad idea to have a Motivational Poster centered around Lord Garmadon, especially coupled with his sad, broken, remorseful face.

^ You can 'be green' by avoiding consumption, acquisition, or acceptance of anything that cannot be readily recycled, i.e. not organic. That means no more LEGO for you!

Gravatar
By in United States,

You could be 'green' in a different sense by being naive and inexperienced, which intentionally or not may fit Lloyd better. 'Be ice' might be short for "be cool as ice," meanimg calm, unemotional, and letting nothing bother you.

father against son with an old teacher.. Star Wars much?

Perfect, I needed a new background and lock screen ;)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The rendered environments and lighting are amazing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So... Is Koko Misako? Is Misako actually in the movie or is Lloyd's mom a completely different person? Or is Koko a pseudonym to hide from Garmadon or whatever?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

"part boy, part nindroid"
So, Zane's a cyborg? P.s. since this is a British site, I'd probably change "mom" to "mum". Just a suggestion.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It is not easy being green... :-D

Gravatar
By in United States,

@SpeedChampionsFan - Traditionally, he's a full-on machine with a human personality. Not sure exactly how they mean 'half' here. Also, whether this is originally a British site or not, these are direct quotes from a LEGO-affiliated source and probably shouldn't be changed merely to normalize it for one section of the people who will see it. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@RyanTh3Great: Koko is short for Misako.

Anyway, it's good to have confirmation that the ninja will have elemental powers, and making those powers real effects rather than bricks does help them feel unique. In The LEGO Movie, the relics were treated as mystical items of great importance because of their otherworldly, non-brick-built nature. It follows that giving similar mysterious abilities to minifigures would be a great way to make them seem extraordinary. I do hope that like the natural plant life we've seen, these powers like ice, fire, and water still behave as if in miniature!

Gravatar
By in United States,

As beautiful as the CG is, I wish it used actual LEGO pieces for the plants and such.

By in United States,

Traditionally Zane is a robot just built to look human. In the movie I imagine he's more like the Terminator. A robot covered in human flesh. I agree. The best animation style was that of the original Lego Movie. 100% brick built elements.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree that the relics felt different because they weren't bricks, but when the elements as well as the natural world are real, it makes one think that the only brickbuilt things might be the manmade objects in the movie, like buildings and vehicles. I guess we'll see.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm pretty happy with Kai, and Cole, and Lloyd, but I think Zane looks too much like a robot. I think he should at least LOOK human like he does in the first three seasons. Wu is awesome, but Nya and Misako (KoKo) look a lot different! Maybe it's for the better? We'll have to wait and see!

Love Garmadon and Jay's new looks! (They're my favorite!)

Gravatar
By in United States,

You mean Garmadom and his wife are DEVORCED?!? Thats messed up. Also means when they had Lloyed Garmadon was a 4 armed monster LOL

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Rad-Hatter - mostly agree. Don't like how they changed the characters. Kai, Lloyd & Wu are mostly the same, Garmadon looks even better and I'm happy with the new Jay, but don't like the changes to Zane, Nya, Misako & Cole.
I'll look forward to seeing the movie though. Should be solid entertainment, maybe just not the Ninjago I'm used to. The trailer alone was great.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

More than anything, I just like the way Wu's pieces all look worn and scratched and *old* in general. It makes sense, since that's the way Lego pieces show their age in the real world; but it just amuses me that they ran with that for the movie world as well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They should've stick the movie to connect with the TV series instead!
